When is IVF an Option?
Article

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a type assisted reproductive technology for fertilization by extracting eggs, collecting a sperm sample, and then combining an egg and sperm manually in a laboratory. The embryo is then transferred to the uterus. IVF is the most efficient type of assisted reproductive technology.

IVF can be used as a treatment for infertility or as a means to prevent genetic problems in the baby. For women over the age of 40, IVF is provided as a primary infertility treatment. IVF can also be done if you have certain health conditions. For example, IVF may be an option in the following cases.

Ovulation Problems

IVF may be an option if the woman has ovulation issues, such as infrequent or absent ovulation, or if fewer eggs are available for fertilization.

Blocked Fallopian Tubes

Fallopian tube blockage blocks the passage of sperm, preventing it from reaching the eggs. It may also block the passage of the fertilized egg into the uterus. IVF may be an option in these cases.

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids is a condition where muscular tumors appear in the wall of the uterus. The vast majority of cases of fibroids are not cancerous (benign). A single uterine fibroid can grow in the uterus, or there may many of them growing at the same time. Fibroids can range greatly in terms of size, as some can be as small as an apple seed, while others are as big as the apple itself, or even larger at times. Fibroids can make it harder for pregnancy to occur, and IVF can help in this regard.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that for the lining of the womb grows on other organs in the body. Endometriosis is usually found in the lower abdomen, or pelvis, but can appear anywhere in the body. IVF can help with conception if you have this condition.

Genetic Disorders

If your future baby is at risk of developing a genetic disorder due to genetic abnormalities you or your partner have, a procedure for genetic involving IVF may be suitable for you. This procedure is known as preimplantation genetic testing and is performed by screening the eggs for certain genetic problems after the eggs are harvested and fertilized. You should know, however, that this method cannot detect all genetic issues. Once the results are interpreted, the embryo can be transferred to the uterus if not problems were detected.

Tubal Ligation

Tubal ligation is a form of female sterilization to prevent pregnancy. If you had tubal ligation and decided you want to have children, IVF may be an option for you.
