Caring for a Child with ADHD... Do's and Don'ts
Article

Having a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is not like raising a child who does not have it. Depending on the type and severity of the symptoms of your child, family routines and activities can become almost impossible. You will need to embrace new methods because it can become frustrating trying to cope with some of the behaviors your child may do. Know, however, that there are ways to make life easier.

Raising a child with ADHD will surely mean that you to change your own behavior. You also need to learn how to deal with your child's behavior. Here are a few things you should and other things you should when dealing with a child with ADHD.

Reduce Distractions

Children with ADHD are easily distracted by almost anything around them. Television, smartphones, and video games can be very distracting and cause impulsive behavior. Try to decrease your child’s time with electronics and increase time doing activities outside the home to have an outlet for built-up energy.

Be Clearer

When responding to your child’s behavior, try to explain why you want your child to stop, or let them known why it is unacceptable instead of just telling them not to do it. Additionally, offer your child a better alternative in such cases. This teaches your child desirable behaviors instead of simply informing them that their behavior is inappropriate.

Do Simplify

Create a quiet room for your child to read, do homework, and get away from the chaos of everyday life. Make sure to keep your home organized and simple to minimize distractions.

Accept Your Child

Children misbehave and tantrums do occur. Accept that this is part of your life now, but not to let it slide. Accepting it will allow you to deal calmly with it.

Don't Get Angry

You are the role model for your kids and they learn the appropriate way to act and respond from you. If they see you yelling they will think that this is an acceptable behavior. Remain firm, but be as calm as possible when you child misbehaves.

Don't Focus on Details

Be prepared to accept certain compromises with your kid. If your child finished most of the tasks you asked them to, be flexible with the remaining one.

Don’t Give Up

Working with your partner or others around you is essential to ensure a consistent discipline. Give your child boundaries and rules and let him\her know the consequences of breaking these rule, and be consistent in enforcing the rules. When a child sees parents waiver on drawing boundaries or consequences, they take it as chance misbehave.

Don't Overwhelm

ADHD affects your child, and this means that you need to accept it and deal with your child under that light. Do not overwhelm your child with tasks, and give them small ones they can complete and feel good about themselves.
