Supporting Your Child's Creativity
Article

As parents, we believe that our goal is to keep our children safe and healthy, and while these aspects are extremely important, there many other things your child requires to grow up into a successful and independent person. Creativity is one of these aspects as it can play a key role in succeeding in almost everything we do.

Many people believe that creativity is something we are born with and cannot be acquired, i.e., it is something that you either have or you do not. The reality, however, is that there are many things you can do to help your child develop creative thinking and become a creative person.

Make a Creativity Space

The first thing you need to do is make a small space for your child where they can engage in creative activities. This can be as simple as letting the child sit in a corner where they can freely play with toys that encourage creativity, such as building blocks.

Maintain Simplicity

Your child will not enjoy her time or feel the fulfillment she must from doing something creative if you let her do things that are too difficult for her. This may actually have the opposite effect. Let your child enjoy simple games and avoid ones that are too complicated.

Engage Senses

Let your kid play outside where he can see, touch, smell, and hear the world around him. Take your kid to new places and let him experience new things. This can be very beneficial for your child’s creativity.

Use Imagination

Encouraging your child to use their imagination is very important to foster creativity. Ask your child to imagine himself going a trip to the beach, for example, and ask him to describe what he would see, feel and sense there.

Give Freedom

When your child is doing something that requires creativity, it is best to let the child do it freely without you telling them how to do it. For example, instead of making your child use building blocks to build something according to the instructions, let your child play and build whatever she wants.

Encourage Reading

Reading can be a great way to let your child use their imagination and build their creativity. Encourage your child to read for fun and not only for school assignments.
