Cold Home Remedies
Article

We all had a run in with the common cold. From the runny nose to the fatigue it can cause, colds can be extremely annoying. A cold usually sticks around for a week or two, and goes away without treatment. While a cold is active, it causes several symptoms that include:

  • Runny nose
  • Stuffy nose
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Headache or body aches, usually mild
  • Mild fever

People with the common cold usually feel generally unwell, which can make them miserable for the duration. While there are no home remedies that can cure the common cold, there are many remedies that can help you to deal with its symptoms and lessen your suffering. Here are some home remedies to help you overcome a cold:

Rest

Getting enough rest when you have a cold is important because it allows your body to heal, which may cause the infection to run for a shorter time.

Fluids

Staying hydrated by drinking fluids such as water, lemon water, and juice helps relieve congestion. Warm drinks may even work better in relieving congestion, but avoid drinks that contain caffeine, like coffee and tea, because they can contribute to dehydration and make your congestion worse.

Air Humidifier

Using an air humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home can help reduce congestion and make it easier for you to breathe. Use the humidifier and clean it as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Saltwater

Prepare a saltwater gargle by dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in 230 milliliters of warm water. Use the saltwater solution to gargle and gain temporary relief of a sore throat. Do not let children younger than six years use this method because they may not be able to gargle properly.

Pain Relief

Use over-the-counter pain medications, such as acetaminophen, to get rid of headaches and body aches that may accompany the cold. Do not give pain relievers to children unless you check with a doctor.

Extra Pillow

Place an extra pillow under your head when you sleep to lessen congestion. This allows mucus to flow more easily.

Blow Correctly

It is common sense that blowing your nose when you have a cold will help relieve congestion, but doing so in a wrong way will let mucus enter your ear canal or sinuses, causing more problems for you to worry. The best way to blow your nose is to push one nostril shut and blow the other.
